Helen Cox is retired teacher who went back to school to persue her passion, she will be graduating this semester with a MFA from California State University Long Beach. She is originally from the east coast and is passionate about art and spreading the awareness of poverty.
Helen’s work consists mainly of horses you’d find on an antique carousel. Everything is done on a rather large scale and is created with strong, bold lines. She incorporates pops of bright colors into her work and utilizes movement when portraying the horses. She also works with different lighting writhing the art.
Cox says her main inspiration for this exhibition was comparing antique carousels with society. She said she became infatuated with carousels, particularly the ones in Griffith Park and began sketching them until she realized that these carousels go around and around and go nowhere much like society spins in circles.
Overall, I was very impressed with this weeks exhibit. It’s always inspiring to see someone come back to school to truly persue their passion and glcreate breathtaking art.
